About The Athenaeum Hotel
Built in 1881 in grand Second Empire style — one of the few vacation hotels of its kind still in operation in the United States. Situated on the grounds of the Chautauqua Institution, overlooking Chautauqua Lake.
The historic Athenaeum welcomes visitors with lakeside lodging in close proximity to Chautauqua Institution's many events and experiences. Heirloom Restaurant on-site under Executive Chef Carrie Gifford serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, and Sunday brunch — coat-and-tie always welcome at dinner. The Lobby Lounge bar runs all evening.

Reviews
The history alone is worth the stay — original 1881 woodwork, the porch overlooking the lake, the dining room that still requires a jacket at dinner. Old-world in the best way. Heirloom dinner was a highlight.
Stayed for a Chautauqua Institution week — perfect location, walk to everything. Rooms are historic-charming (read: small + period-appropriate). Service is impeccable.
